Nick James is an experienced senior trial attorney who specializes in helping his clients overcome challenging and seemingly impossible situations. Nick’s passion for helping others began in law school where he earned high honors for his pro bono service. He helped earn the release of a teenager who was wrongfully convicted of 11 counts of attempted murder and sentenced to over 200 years in prison. 

Tenacious and Relentless Advocacy

This passion for justice led him to begin his career as a public defender in El Paso County, Colorado, where he spent 5 years tirelessly advocating for those in need. Nick earned a reputation as a tenacious and relentless litigator, earning countless dismissals for his clients in redress of violations of their constitutional rights. Nick was never afraid to take anything to trialand obtained acquittals for his clients in everything from unlawful feeding of big game to attempted first degree murder.

Knowing When to Stop

Sometimes a lawyer’s best advice is knowing when to stop. Nick worked as a public defender as hard as he could for as long as he could and decided to take a well-earned sabbatical in 2021. Nick thru-hiked the 2,193 mile Appalachian Trail and then spent a winter chasing snow out west. If he did not visit the Roaring Fork Valley, he would probably still be traveling around Canada looking for the perfect pillow line.

Compassionate and Client Focused Representation

Not every case is meant to end up in a trial. Some of Nick’s best work is the work no one will ever hear about—advocating against criminal charges before they are filed and counseling clients though difficult circumstances. Nick’s priority is to get to know his clients and their circumstances so he can help them best repair the damage they have caused, and often even as important, repair themselves.
